Screen Addiction, Art by Kunle O.

We live in a world where we are constantly gazing at screens. Whether it’s on our phones while checking our social media accounts, browsing the web on our laptops, playing video games, or watching shows on TV, we spend a significant portion of our time in front of screens. According to Exploding Topics, we spend an average of 6 hours and 58 minutes per day in front of a screen. This is even more for teens, as they average 7 hours and 22 minutes, and that does not include time spent doing their homework on a computer. This comes as no surprise, as we are in a digital age where our jobs often require screen time, whether it’s for sending emails, creating spreadsheets, or building apps.

Some studies indicate that excessive screen time may impact your health. One study mentioned in a Heads Up article states that your body releases a chemical called melatonin at night in response to darkness, which helps you fall asleep. Spending time on a bright screen at night can reduce melatonin production, keeping you awake.

Other studies suggest that too much screen time can also affect your mood and exacerbate symptoms of depression. There are strategies to help reduce your screen time:

1. Turn off all screens before going to bed 🙅🏾‍♂️💻

2.Schedule breaks to be away from your screen, for example, spend 5 minutes away from the screen every 30 minutes.🚶🏾‍♀️🧘🏾‍♂️

3. Use your phone settings to help decrease screen time. Apple offers Do Not Disturb and Screen Time settings, while Android provides a Digital Wellbeing app and the ability to pause an app for a set amount of time. 📱⚙️
